Hong Kong Events - January 2027

January is the cool, dry heart of the Hong Kong winter, and in Wan Chai it is the month the exhibition year restarts. The Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre (HKCEC) on the waterfront comes back to life with the first trade fairs of 2027, while Lunar New Year Day 1 falls on Saturday 6 February, so the last ten days of January are the run-up to the busiest fortnight of the district's year.

Wan Chai itself stays walkable all month. The heritage streets, Tai Yuen Street and the Golden Bauhinia Square promenade are at their most comfortable in the cool, dry air, and the crowds that fill the HKCEC in a trade week do not reach the old neighbourhood. Everything below is a confirmed 2027 date unless the entry says otherwise.

๐ŸŽช Trade fairs at the HKCEC

HKTDC Toys & Games Fair, Baby Products Fair and Stationery & School Supplies Fair

๐Ÿ“… Monday 11 - Thursday 14 January 2027

Three HKTDC fairs run together at the HKCEC to open the exhibition year: the Toys & Games Fair, the Baby Products Fair and the Hong Kong International Stationery & School Supplies Fair. These are trade fairs, so admission is for registered buyers with trade credentials rather than the general public.

Why go: if you are in the trade this is the week the HKCEC is at its most focused; for everyone else it is a good marker of the season, because the district's hotels and restaurants fill with buyers while the heritage streets stay calm.

๐Ÿ“ Location: Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre, 1 Expo Drive, Wan Chai

๐Ÿ’ต Cost: Trade only โ€” registered buyers

๐Ÿท๏ธ Categories: Trade Fair, Toys, Business

๐Ÿ—“๏ธ Status: Confirmed for 11-14 January 2027 (HKTDC).

HKTDC Education & Careers Expo

๐Ÿ“… Thursday 21 - Sunday 24 January 2027

The HKCEC's big public fair of the month, aimed at students and career-changers: universities, vocational providers, employers and study-abroad agents under one roof.

Why go: it is the one January HKCEC fair that anyone can walk into, and it turns the Wan Chai waterfront into a students' week โ€” a good moment to pair a fair visit with the district's own heritage walk.

๐Ÿ“ Location: HKCEC, 1 Expo Drive, Wan Chai

๐Ÿ’ต Cost: Open to the public โ€” free entry

๐Ÿท๏ธ Categories: Expo, Education, Careers

๐Ÿ—“๏ธ Status: Confirmed for 21-24 January 2027 (HKTDC).

๐Ÿฎ Chinese New Year build-up

Lee Tung Avenue lantern display and New Year market

๐Ÿ“… From late January 2027 โ€” annual event, 2027 dates not yet confirmed

Lee Tung Avenue, the 200-metre pedestrian avenue off Queen's Road East, runs a Chinese New Year lantern campaign every year with its weekend pop-up market alongside it. In 2026 the campaign opened in late January; the 2027 dates and theme have not been published.

Why go: this is the district's own New Year spectacle and it is free โ€” the lanterns go up over the avenue and the market fills with local makers at the weekends.

๐Ÿ“ Location: Lee Tung Avenue, 200 Queen's Road East, Wan Chai

๐Ÿ’ต Cost: Free

๐Ÿท๏ธ Categories: Festival, Market, Family

๐Ÿ—“๏ธ Status: Annual event โ€” 2027 dates not confirmed. Check leetungavenue.com.hk.

WeekCommune weekend market

๐Ÿ“… Every Saturday and Sunday, 12:00-20:00

The avenue's regular weekend market of design, craft and food stalls, running year-round along the 200-metre avenue.

Why go: the cheapest half-day in Wan Chai, and the easiest way to see the avenue without a campaign crowd.

๐Ÿ“ Location: Lee Tung Avenue, Wan Chai

๐Ÿ’ต Cost: Free entry

๐Ÿท๏ธ Categories: Market, Design, Family

๐Ÿ—“๏ธ Status: Recurring weekend event.

๐Ÿ‡ญ๐Ÿ‡ฐ Wan Chai's year-round fixtures

Golden Bauhinia Square flag-raising

๐Ÿ“… Daily, about 08:00 โ€” enhanced ceremony on the first day of each month

The ceremonial flag-raising at Golden Bauhinia Square on the Wan Chai waterfront. On 1 January an enhanced ceremony marks the start of the year.

Why go: the square is the district's front door to Victoria Harbour, and the flag-raising is the one daily ceremony in Wan Chai โ€” the 1 January edition is the most formal of the year.

๐Ÿ“ Location: Golden Bauhinia Square, Wan Chai waterfront

๐Ÿ’ต Cost: Free

๐Ÿท๏ธ Categories: Ceremony, Free

๐Ÿ—“๏ธ Status: Recurring; see Golden Bauhinia Square.

Wan Chai Heritage Trail

๐Ÿ“… Any day, self-guided

The free self-guided walk through the district's historic sites โ€” the Blue House, the Old Wan Chai Post Office, Hung Shing Temple and more. January's cool, dry weather is the best of the year for it.

Why go: it is the counterweight to a trade-fair week โ€” the old neighbourhood, ten minutes from the HKCEC, at its most comfortable.

๐Ÿ“ Location: Wan Chai streets; route on the Wan Chai Heritage Trail guide

๐Ÿ’ต Cost: Free

๐Ÿท๏ธ Categories: Walking, Heritage, Free

๐Ÿ—“๏ธ Status: Recurring, free, self-guided.

Tai Yuen Street (Toy Street)

๐Ÿ“… Daily

The open-air toy and street market on Tai Yuen Street, a short walk from the HKCEC, trading daily through January.

Why go: well stocked in the run-up to New Year, and a reminder that Wan Chai is a working street-market district, not only an expo hall.

๐Ÿ“ Location: Tai Yuen Street, Wan Chai โ€” see the market guide

๐Ÿ’ต Cost: Free to browse

๐Ÿท๏ธ Categories: Market, Shopping

๐Ÿ—“๏ธ Status: Recurring, open daily.

๐Ÿง‘๐Ÿซ Courses and workshops to book this month

  • Chinese calligraphy and seal carving โ€” the Hong Kong Arts Centre in Wan Chai runs Brushstrokes and Imprints as an eight-lesson course, about 12 hours in total, taught in Cantonese with English support and with materials included. Why this month: the New Year calligraphy season starts here. Book at hkas.edu.hk.

๐Ÿงญ Practical notes for January

  • Getting there: the HKCEC is a walk from Wan Chai MTR station on the Island Line via the covered link, and the Heritage Trail and Lee Tung Avenue sit in the same quarter. See getting there.
  • Timing: weekdays of a fair week are the busiest at the HKCEC; the heritage streets are calmest in the morning.
  • Book ahead: none of Wan Chai's own January events needs a ticket, but if you are visiting for an HKCEC fair, book the hotel early โ€” the district fills in fair weeks. See the 2027 hotel price guide.
  • Free alternatives: the Heritage Trail, the Golden Bauhinia Square ceremony, Tai Yuen Street and the harbourfront promenade all cost nothing.
