Hong Kong Events - September 2027

September belongs to Mid-Autumn, and in Wan Chai the festival is the district's prettiest week of the year. The festival itself falls on Wednesday 15 September, with the public holiday on Thursday 16 September, and the lanterns along Lee Tung Avenue and the moon-viewing on the waterfront make the old streets the best place in the city to spend the evening.

The weather finally breaks in September: the humidity starts to lift towards the end of the month and the evenings become walkable again, which makes it a good month for the Heritage Trail after the ferocity of July and August. Everything below is a confirmed 2027 date unless the entry says otherwise.

🏮 Mid-Autumn Festival

Mid-Autumn Festival — the night of the full moon

📅 Wednesday 15 September 2027 — public holiday Thursday 16 September

The Mid-Autumn Festival falls on the fifteenth day of the eighth lunar month, and its centrepiece is the evening of the full moon: lanterns, mooncakes and moon-viewing with family and friends.

Why go: it is the district's own festival evening. Buy mooncakes from the Wan Chai shops and bakeries in the fortnight beforehand, then walk the lantern streets and the harbourfront as the moon comes up.

📍 Location: Citywide; Wan Chai's streets and harbourfront

đŸ’ĩ Cost: Free to walk; mooncakes and lanterns at local prices

đŸ—“ī¸ Status: Confirmed — Mid-Autumn falls on Wednesday 15 September 2027, with the holiday on the 16th.

Lee Tung Avenue's Mid-Autumn lanterns and the waterfront moon-viewing

📅 Around 15-16 September 2027 — annual event, 2027 dates not yet confirmed

Lee Tung Avenue usually dresses its 200-metre avenue with Mid-Autumn lanterns for the festival, and the Wan Chai waterfront promenade — the place to watch the moon rise over the harbour — fills on festival night. The 2027 display dates have not been published.

Why go: the lanterns at Lee Tung Avenue and the moon over Victoria Harbour are the two free things to do on festival night, and they are ten minutes' walk apart.

Wan Chai Heritage Trail

The free self-guided walk through the Blue House, the Old Wan Chai Post Office, Hung Shing Temple and the rest of the district's historic sites. September's drier, cooler evenings are the first good walking weather since spring.

Why go: the festival lanterns and the trail make a natural pairing — do the trail in the late afternoon and finish at the harbourfront for the moonrise.

📍 Location: Wan Chai streets — route on the Heritage Trail guide

đŸ’ĩ Cost: Free

🧭 Practical notes for September

  • Getting there: Wan Chai MTR station is on the Island Line; Lee Tung Avenue and the waterfront are both a short walk. See getting there.
  • Timing: festival night (the evening of 15 September) is the busiest; the lanterns usually stay up for a week or two either side.
  • Book ahead: Mid-Autumn is a family holiday, so restaurant tables fill in the run-up — book if you want somewhere specific. See the 2027 hotel price guide for rates.
  • Free alternatives: the lanterns, the waterfront moon-viewing, the flag-raising ceremony and the Heritage Trail cost nothing.
