Wan Chai Bar Crawl: A Walkable Lockhart Road & Jaffe Road Route
Wan Chai's nightlife is a strip, not a sprawl. Lockhart Road and Jaffe Road run through the same few blocks a short walk from Wan Chai Station, and several of Hong Kong's longest-running live-music bars sit on or just off them. That is what makes a bar crawl here work on foot: you can start at one venue, walk to the next, and still have the last stop within a couple of minutes of the first.
This page sets out a simple three-stop route in order, using each venue's own published address and opening hours. It is a companion to our Wan Chai nightlife & entertainment guide, which covers the district's wider venue scene. This page answers the narrower question: how do you actually walk the strip in one evening?
Before you go
Every address, phone number and opening time below is taken from the venue's own website. None of the three venues publishes drink prices, so this page lists none. Opening hours are as published by each venue and can change with the season or a one-off event, so check the operator's own page before you set out.
The route at a glance
| Stop | Venue | Address | What it is for |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 — start | The Wanch | 1/F, Henan Building, 90 Jaffe Road | Food, happy hour and free live music; a relaxed first stop |
| 2 | Carnegie's | G/F, Spa Centre, 53–55 Lockhart Road | The Lockhart Road anchor, with the latest published closing time of the three |
| 3 | Joe Bananas | G/F, The Phoenix Building, 23 Luard Road | Live bands and DJs to finish the night |
The three stops sit within a short walk of one another on the Jaffe Road and Lockhart Road strip, with the third a block away on Luard Road. Allow a few minutes between stops and treat the order as a suggestion rather than a rule — the whole point of this crawl is that nothing on it requires a taxi.
Stop 1 — The Wanch, 90 Jaffe Road
Start at The Wanch, at 1/F, Henan Building, 90 Jaffe Road. It is the natural opener because it is the only one of the three that serves food and advertises free live music, which means you can eat, settle in for an early set and then decide how much of the night you still want ahead of you.
Address: 1/F, Henan Building, 90 Jaffe Road, Wan Chai
Phone: +852 3692 5933
Published hours: Mon–Fri from 11:30 am until late; Sat & Sun from 3:00 pm until late
Happy hour: from opening until 20:00
Food: Sun–Thu until 21:45; Fri & Sat until 22:45
Music: free live music most nights, per the venue's own calendar
The Wanch describes itself as a historic, friendly, hassle-free music club offering “a wide variety of free live music”, and that is the shape of an evening here: unpretentious, music-led, and easy to start early. The venue opened at 54 Jaffe Road on 20 October 1987 and moved to its current 90 Jaffe Road home, which opened in June 2022.
When to arrive for the band: aim for happy hour, which runs from opening until 20:00, and you will be in the room before the evening's first set. The Wanch publishes a weekly calendar of what is playing, so check it on the day and time your arrival to the act you actually want to see rather than guessing.
Stop 2 — Carnegie's, 53–55 Lockhart Road
From Jaffe Road, walk across to Lockhart Road and Carnegie's at the G/F, Spa Centre, 53–55 Lockhart Road. This is the anchor of the crawl because it opens in the afternoon and stays open until 05:00 — the latest published closing time of the three stops.
Address: G/F, Spa Centre, 53–55 Lockhart Road, Wan Chai
Phone: (852) 2866 6289
Published hours: Mon–Sun, 15:00 – 05:00
Programming: daily events, a regular Ladies Night, and live music in the form of jam nights, live bands and open-jazz sessions
Carnegie's is also the room most likely to give the night its loud half. The operators describe it as the original “bar-dancing” venue, and they note a strong rugby following, particularly around the Rugby Sevens season in March. If your visit lands in that window, expect the bar to be busier than usual and to be full of people who have been at the stadium all day.
Stop 3 — Joe Bananas, 23 Luard Road
Finish on Luard Road at Joe Bananas, at the G/F of The Phoenix Building, 23 Luard Road. It is a block off the Lockhart Road strip and has been part of Wan Chai since 1985 — the original premises were completely rebuilt and the bar reopened on 1 August 2014.
Address: G/F, The Phoenix Building, 23 Luard Road, Wan Chai

Music: live bands and DJs
Joe Bananas advertises live bands and DJs and says its stage hosts live bands “to the late morning”, which makes it a fitting last stop. One caution: Joe Bananas does not publish opening hours on its own site, so we do not state any here. Treat it as the flexible end of the route and confirm it is open on the night you plan to visit.
The street character: why this route works on foot
Lockhart Road and Jaffe Road are the two streets that give the crawl its shape. They run close together through this part of Wan Chai, separated by only a block, with Luard Road linking them near the eastern end. The practical effect is that a stop on one street is a short walk from a stop on the other, and the bar density along both makes the strip feel continuous rather than like a string of separate destinations.
Wan Chai Station on the Island Line is the transport anchor for the whole thing. The MTR's own walking notes for the area put Tai Yuen Street about three minutes from the station and the Blue House about six, which places the bar strip on the same side of the neighbourhood, between the station and the Queen's Road East sights. Exit A3 is the usual way out for the bar strip.
Practical notes for the night
- Getting there: Wan Chai Station (Island Line), Exit A3. See our getting to Wan Chai guide for the full set of options.
- Walk times: the strip is short. Plan on a few minutes between stops rather than a journey, and use the addresses above in a maps app if you want exact door-to-door directions.
- Money: none of the three venues publishes drink prices, so this page gives no budget figures. Check the menu at the door.
- Hours: the times listed are the venues' own published hours. They can change, so confirm with the operator before travelling.
- Eat first if you want a longer night: The Wanch serves food until 21:45 (22:45 on Fridays and Saturdays), and Wan Chai has plenty of other dinner options — see our best restaurants in Wan Chai and Wan Chai dining guides to plan dinner before the crawl.
- Timing your visit: weeknights are quieter on the strip; weekends and event periods, including the March Rugby Sevens, are busier. Our when to visit Wan Chai guide covers the wider calendar.
Wan Chai bar crawl FAQ
What is the Wan Chai bar crawl route?
The walkable version is three stops: The Wanch at 90 Jaffe Road, then Carnegie's at 53–55 Lockhart Road, then Joe Bananas at 23 Luard Road. All three are within a short walk of each other on and just off the Jaffe Road and Lockhart Road strip.
How do I get to Lockhart Road by MTR?
Take the Island Line to Wan Chai Station and leave by Exit A3. The MTR's own walking notes for the area put Tai Yuen Street about three minutes from the station and the Blue House about six, and Lockhart Road and Jaffe Road sit within that same short walk.
What time do the Wan Chai bars close?
It depends on the venue, and the only reliable sources are the venues themselves. The Wanch publishes hours of Mon–Fri from 11:30 am until late and Sat & Sun from 3:00 pm until late. Carnegie's publishes Mon–Sun, 15:00 – 05:00. Joe Bananas does not publish opening hours on its own site, so check before you go.
That is the whole crawl: one street to start on, one to cross to, and one last stop nearby. Because everything is on the same compact strip, you can compress it into an early evening or stretch it until Carnegie's 05:00 close — the route holds either way.
