Hong Kong Events - May 2027

May is the hinge of Wan Chai's year: the trade season's last big fair, the food-and-hospitality show HOFEX, runs in the first half of the month, and the district then swings outdoors as the Wan Chai Harbourfront Event Space opens its summer programme. Warm, wet weather arrives with it, so plan around the rain and use the covered MTR links between venues.

The month carries two public holidays โ€” Labour Day on 1 May and the Birthday of the Buddha on 13 May โ€” which bracket the HOFEX week and give the district two long weekends. Everything below is a confirmed 2027 date unless the entry says otherwise.

๐Ÿฝ๏ธ HOFEX โ€” food and hospitality week

HOFEX 2027

๐Ÿ“… Monday 10 - Wednesday 12 May 2027

Asia's leading food-and-hospitality trade show fills the HKCEC with suppliers, equipment, chefs' competitions and the region's biggest gathering of the restaurant and hotel trade. It is organised by Informa Markets and is trade-facing.

Why go: if you work in food service or hospitality it is the week of the year; for everyone else it is the cue that the district's restaurants are running their season's new menus, and the waterfront is busy from breakfast.

๐Ÿ“ Location: Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre, 1 Expo Drive, Wan Chai

๐Ÿ’ต Cost: Trade only โ€” registered buyers

๐Ÿท๏ธ Categories: Trade Fair, Food, Hospitality

๐Ÿ—“๏ธ Status: Confirmed for 10-12 May 2027 (organiser Informa Markets).

๐ŸŽช The harbourfront summer season

SummerFest@Wan Chai

๐Ÿ“… Expected from late May 2027 โ€” annual event, 2027 programme not yet confirmed

The Wan Chai Harbourfront Event Space on Hung Hing Road runs a summer festival of outdoor pop-ups, food stalls, live music and family programming every year. In 2026 the season ran from 29 May to 4 October; the 2027 programme and dates have not been published.

Why go: it is the district's own open-air summer โ€” free to walk through, on the water, and the best reason to be in Wan Chai on a warm evening rather than inside a mall.

๐Ÿ“ Location: Wan Chai Harbourfront Event Space, 3 Hung Hing Road, Wan Chai

๐Ÿ’ต Cost: Free entry (individual events may be ticketed)

๐Ÿท๏ธ Categories: Festival, Outdoors, Family

๐Ÿ—“๏ธ Status: Annual event โ€” 2027 dates not confirmed. Check wches.com.hk.

Golden Bauhinia Square and the harbourfront promenade

๐Ÿ“… Daily

With the evenings warm, the promenade between Golden Bauhinia Square and the HKCEC becomes the district's living room: the daily flag-raising at about 08:00, the harbour views across to Kowloon, and the Star Ferry from Wan Chai pier.

Why go: it is free, it is on the doorstep of every Wan Chai hotel, and in May the evenings are at their best before the summer heat peaks.

๐Ÿ“ Location: Wan Chai waterfront, Golden Bauhinia Square

๐Ÿ’ต Cost: Free

๐Ÿท๏ธ Categories: Outdoors, Free, Family

๐Ÿ—“๏ธ Status: Recurring; see Golden Bauhinia Square.

๐Ÿ‡ญ๐Ÿ‡ฐ Public holidays

Labour Day

๐Ÿ“… Saturday 1 May 2027

A general holiday opening the month, with the traditional May Day break giving the district a long weekend.

Why go: expect the malls and waterfront busy and some small shops shut; it is a good day for the promenade and the parks.

๐Ÿ“ Location: Hong Kong-wide; Wan Chai

๐Ÿ’ต Cost: Free

๐Ÿท๏ธ Categories: Public Holiday

๐Ÿ—“๏ธ Status: Confirmed โ€” Labour Day is Saturday 1 May 2027.

Birthday of the Buddha

๐Ÿ“… Thursday 13 May 2027

A general holiday marking the Buddha's birthday, the day after HOFEX closes. Temples across the city hold bathing-the-Buddha ceremonies.

Why go: a midweek long weekend, and the calmest day of the month in the district's temples โ€” Wan Chai's Hung Shing Temple and the neighbourhood shrines are worth the walk.

๐Ÿ“ Location: Hong Kong-wide; Wan Chai's temples

๐Ÿ’ต Cost: Free

๐Ÿท๏ธ Categories: Public Holiday, Religious

๐Ÿ—“๏ธ Status: Confirmed โ€” the Birthday of the Buddha falls on Thursday 13 May 2027.

๐Ÿงญ Practical notes for May

  • Getting there: the HKCEC is a covered walk from Wan Chai MTR station on the Island Line; the Harbourfront Event Space is a short walk north along Hung Hing Road. See getting there.
  • Timing: HOFEX week (10-12 May) is the busiest; the weekends are busiest on the promenade if the summer season has started.
  • Book ahead: HOFEX is a hotel-filling week โ€” see the 2027 hotel price guide.
  • Rain plan: May is one of the wetter months, so keep a covered option in mind โ€” the HKCEC link, the MTR and the malls all connect without going outside.
  • Free alternatives: the promenade, the flag-raising ceremony, the Heritage Trail and Tai Yuen Street cost nothing.
